*sad sigh*
Fantasy and crime are my two favourite genres and I always mourn the lack of fantasy crime novels. Yes, there's Rivers of London and I love this series but it's much more a typical Urban Fantasy with some crime-elements.
This however is your typical whodunit that just happens to be set in a world where magic exists (and everybody knows about it). And it's the first in a series!
It should be all my dreams come true...
Only I'm starting to hate Olivia, the main character, with a burning passion.
She's behaving more and more asshole-ish.
Because yelling at grieving people and generally completely ignoring the fact that the people around you have emotions makes you an asshole.
And yelling at grieving people and generally completely ignoring the fact that the people around you have emotions while wearing colourful clothes and cute hair still makes you an asshole. Not quirky. The author seems to get those things mixed up.
Which is a shame because the rest of the story is good. The writing even has some really great bits (Chris, the other MC, lost both his parents when he was 14 and when something brings back the memories of that day it actually hurts reading those pages because the writing was so beautiful and emotional).
But I can't get over Olivia. It is hinted at that there is *~*something*~* but I honestly don't care. I'm sick of Dark And Troubled Past as excuse for dickish behaviour.
