Eliza: Oh that name seemed vaguely familiar, I wondered if perhaps I had heard it before.
She also loves keeping things from the reader, e.g. a chapter ends on a revelation/cliff-hanger and then the next chapter starts as if nothing happened and only halfway through Eliza has the decency to mention what exactly happened.
It is so annoying...even more than in Boyne's Absolutist where it at least made in-universe sense that the narrator is reluctant to talk about certain topics (and that was frustrating anyway). Eliza has no reason to trip around topics the way she does.
